From the Edge to a New Beginning
There was a time when Michael believed his life had reached its end.
It was not because he lacked ambition or effort, he was doing well. Over time, however, the wrong influences and choices began to take hold. One decision led to another, and eventually everything he had worked for unraveled. His money disappeared, his stability faded, and before long, Michael no longer had a place to call home.
“I want to live now. I want to go on in life. I’ve been given a second chance, and I’m going to take full advantage of it.”
Living in his car took a heavy toll. Michael felt isolated, exhausted, and overwhelmed by regret. Each day felt harder than the one before it. He shared that life had become so difficult that he was ready to give up.
In that darkest moment, Michael reached a breaking point. Yet even there, something stopped him. He turned to God and asked for forgiveness for what he was about to do. In that moment of desperation, Michael says, “that’s when He spoke to me and told me, no, I have something for you. Trust in Me, be patient, and you will get it.”
From that point forward, Michael felt a sense of peace he had not known before. He decided to stay on the path set in front of him and to keep moving forward, even when the future was uncertain. He describes it as following a road of faith and perseverance, believing that something better was waiting at the end.
While living in his car during the winter months, Michael developed severe frostbite on his foot. The injury became so serious that doctors later had to amputate his baby toe. During his hospital stay at Eskenazi, Michael learned about Wheeler Mission for the first time. With nowhere else to go, he came to Wheeler Mission, and he was welcomed.
Michael remembers how meaningful it was to be accepted and cared for when he had no place left to turn. Wheeler Mission provided him with safety, stability, and support during a time when he desperately needed all three. He believes that places like Wheeler Mission are essential, especially for individuals who otherwise would remain on the streets without help or hope.
He recalls that his first night at Wheeler Mission felt unfamiliar and uncomfortable. He was surrounded by people he did not know and naturally kept to himself at first. Over time, that uneasiness began to fade. Slowly, something inside him started to change.
He’s noticed a difference in himself since coming to Wheeler Mission. He shared that he wants to live now and that he wants to move forward with his life. He sees his time at Wheeler Mission as a second chance and is determined to make the most of it.
Today, Michael stands at the beginning of a new chapter. What once felt impossible now feels real. He has the opportunity to rebuild his life with stability, purpose, and hope.
Michael says he has reached the end of one journey and the beginning of another. Not an ending, but a new beginning.
