The love YOU share allows neighbors like Kevin to turn his life around.
Kevin had a pretty good childhood growing up with his three brothers, his mom and stepdad. But when he was 12, he started to be curious about alcohol that he would see the adults drinking while playing cards at family gatherings. He’d sneak a taste here and there.
Later on those tastes just triggered him when his peers would be drinking, he would join them. From there, it just grew.
Years later, he was married, had a good life but always felt like he needed the drinks to get comfortable. He wasn’t ready for married life.
Alcohol gave him the feeling of freedom. This led him to leave for days at a time and not communicate with family, ending in losing his welcome at home.
He lived in his truck for a year, always wondering where his next meal would come from. He woke up one morning and just decided that “enough is enough” and came to Wheeler Mission and found that he was not alone. There were many people in the same situation. That made him feel welcome.
“There is no sugar-coating it. I was leading a sinful life.”
His time at Camp Hunt, in the Hebron program gave him the ability to get away from all of the distractions and focus on changing his ways. “I’m thankful for Wheeler because they brought me in. They didn’t care what color you are… what you look like. They are just a blessing. I was lost. I found myself here.”
“I hope people support the Mission because there are
people that are in need, but they are afraid to ask for help. They just need to know that there is help here at Wheeler. They need to be here. Then just try it. Just try it.
