“I know all things are possible with God.”
Our staff found Edward on the sidewalk outside our doors. He was disoriented, and his body was starting to shut down. Without help, he likely had just days left to live. Edward’s life had been a downhill spiral of substance abuse and homelessness for nearly 60 years.
As a child, things came easy for Edward. He excelled in sports and was well-liked. “I used to be the best at everything,” he says. His mother raised him in their local church. But everything changed after his father introduced him to marijuana, which led to harder drugs, addiction, and incarceration.
By the time he found himself in front of Wheeler Mission, Edward was at rock bottom—physically, mentally, and emotionally. He spent 30 days regaining his strength in the hospital before joining our Shelter for Men.
With the encouragement and support of our staff, Edward began to find himself again. He left his past of addiction and found a new purpose for his future. Now he is an example of a Christian servant to our other male guests.
“I lived a life of sin... money, drugs, and violence.”
“When I see somebody hurting, I just give them some good words, and I can see a bit of hope in their eyes. That really touches my heart… that it’s the Lord working through me,” he says. “I know all things are possible with God.”
He even finds joy in cleaning the bathrooms. “It’s a terrible job, but I don’t mind doing it—because I know I’m doing it for a bigger purpose,” he says.
Edward’s fresh start is possible because of you! Thank you for your prayers and support that are filling him with hope for the new year. “Wheeler Mission saved my life. Before, I didn’t care about anyone. Now my desire is to help bring as many people to God as I can,” he says. “I’m proud of myself.”
