Finding Faith at Wheeler Mission
David never imagined that one season of his life could unravel so quickly — or that God would meet him so powerfully in the middle of it.
Not long ago, David was focused on building his future. He was enrolled at Atterbury Job Corps, working toward certifications in concrete and glazing, earning his high school diploma, and getting his driver’s license. He was preparing for a career in the trades and dreaming of stability. But family conflict changed everything. After being asked to leave home and later terminated from his program, David suddenly found himself without a place to live.
“I really just needed somewhere to go,” David shared. “I didn’t know what my next step looked like.”
That step led him to Wheeler Mission.
“I was grateful for a roof over my head, for food, and just to not be on the streets,” he said. “The staff here really feel like family.”
A Hard Road from the Start
Walking through the doors of the shelter wasn’t easy. His first night was difficult and overwhelming. Like many who come to Wheeler Mission, David arrived carrying fear, uncertainty, and deep emotional wounds. He had spent parts of his teenage years running away and living without stability. He had experienced broken relationships, favoritism at home, and the pain of feeling unwanted.
Yet even in the chaos, God was not absent.
When David arrived at Wheeler Mission in March, the nights were still cold. What stood out to him first wasn’t just a bed or a meal — it was safety.
Learning to Stand on His Feet
After briefly staying with his sister in another city, David returned to Wheeler Mission and realized something had to change. He knew he couldn’t return to life on the streets. This time, he was determined to work.
He applied for jobs. He began earning an income. He started taking responsibility for his future in a new way. And along the way, Wheeler Mission walked beside him — providing structure, accountability, encouragement, and hope.
“This place taught me how to be on my feet,” David said. “To take care of myself. To serve others. To be part of a community.”
A Growing Faith
David had been introduced to church at a young age after being adopted from South America. Years later, during his time at Job Corps, he was baptized — a moment that became a turning point in his walk with God.
“When I got baptized, I told God that whatever I do with my life is yours,” David said. “My career, my future, all of it.”
But it wasn’t until he found himself at Wheeler Mission that his faith became deeply personal. One night, walking alone in the rain, overwhelmed and afraid, David cried out to God for help. The next morning, he felt God clearly prompting him to act — to apply for work and take his next step forward.
That obedience changed everything.
Today, David is growing spiritually and learning how to trust God with what lies ahead. “I feel good as a child of God,” he shared. “I know He’s still working on me.”
Rebuilding What Was Lost
In the middle of this already difficult season, David experienced another heartbreaking loss. Due to a shipping error, nearly all of his personal belongings were stolen — including baby photos, family memories, and even his Marine uniform that connected him to his veteran grandfather.
“It felt like everything from my past was taken all at once,” he said.
Still, David chooses to move forward with hope.
“I guess this is just a new beginning,” he reflected. “I’m rebuilding everything again.”
Looking Toward the Future
Today, David is working, saving, and training for the life he hopes to build. His goal is to join the Concrete Labor Union, buy a truck, move into a small apartment, and build a long-term career in construction. He dreams of stability, independence, and eventually retiring from the trade he’s trained for.
More than anything, he wants his life to honor God.
“Whatever God wants me to do, I’ll do,” David said simply.
Grateful for a Place to Belong
David is deeply thankful for the role Wheeler Mission has played in his life.
“If I wasn’t here,” he said, “I honestly don’t know where I’d be.”
He sees firsthand how the Mission changes lives — not just for men, but for women and families across the city. He knows what it feels like to need clean clothes, basic hygiene, shelter, and someone who believes in you.
“I hope people will support Wheeler Mission because people here really need it,” David said. “This place is important to the whole community. Nobody has to feel alone here. They’ve got staff, they’ve got support, and they’ve got God leading them.”
A Life Still Being Written
David’s story is far from finished — but what’s already clear is that God is at work.
What began as a season of loss has become a season of growth. What felt like the end became the start of something new. Through the shelter, the staff, and the grace of God, David is finding stability, purpose, and renewed faith.
And he’s walking forward — one step at a time — with hope.
