Brett’s Story

Back to God!

Brett didn’t come to Wheeler Mission after a lifetime of instability. In fact, he had what many would consider a strong start—a loving family, a secure home in Indianapolis’ Meridian-Kessler neighborhood, and a successful career as a licensed architect. But success doesn’t guarantee peace. Behind Brett’s achievements was a growing sense of entitlement, perfectionism, and eventually, addiction.

“I was raised in a ‘work hard, play hard’ culture,” Brett said. “Alcohol was just normal—at family dinners, parties, everywhere. It didn’t feel wrong. It just felt like life.”

"You may not see the change right away, but believe me—it’s happening."

That perspective, combined with unaddressed trauma and pressure to excel, set the stage for a decades-long struggle with substance use. By the time he reached his 50s, Brett’s drinking had spiraled into something he could no longer control. He faced medical crises, homelessness, strained relationships, and the painful realization that he could no longer live this way.

“I walked into a treatment center and said, ‘I’m done. I can’t take it anymore,’” he remembered. “That moment saved my life.”

After treatment, Brett found himself without a place to go. A few temporary hotel stays turned into wandering, battling illness, and eventually being directed to Wheeler Mission in 2023.

“At first, I didn’t feel safe or settled,” he admitted. “But looking back, it was what I needed. You kept me sober.”

Though the transition was difficult, Brett began to notice a change—not just in the environment, but within himself. He recognized the structure, the discipline, and the faith-based foundation that Wheeler provided. This wasn’t just a place to stay. It was a space to reflect, heal, and rebuild.

Today, Brett is seven months sober and living in transitional housing. He’s active in his recovery, committed to daily prayer and reflection, and deeply connected to his faith. “The more spiritual I get,” he said, “the fewer triggers I have to drink.”

One of the greatest transformations has been in how Brett sees himself. Once self-focused, he’s now eager to serve others in small but meaningful ways—sharing a cup of coffee, a conversation, or simply showing up for those around him.

“I used to think the world revolved around me,” he said. “Now I’m learning it’s about we—me, God, and others.”

Looking forward, Brett dreams of starting his own architecture firm and even hopes to give back through volunteering— “You’ve given me a reason to live,” he said. “And I want to help others find theirs.”
